When Everyone Has the Same AI, Brand Is the Last Moat
The tools are commoditizing fast. Every competitor now has the same models, the same automation, the same speed. What remains scarce is the reason a buyer trusts you before they ever talk to you.
The Great Flattening
Something quiet has happened over the past eighteen months. The capabilities that used to separate strong marketing teams from weak ones have become available to everyone at once. My competitors can generate content as fast as I can. They can personalize at the same scale, run the same intent platforms, and spin up landing pages in an afternoon. The execution gap that took years to build has collapsed into a subscription. When the means of production are identical across an entire category, output stops being a differentiator. Speed stops being a differentiator. The playing field flattens, and the things that survive the flattening are the things AI cannot manufacture on your behalf.
Trust Does Not Come From a Model
A model can write a convincing case study. It cannot make a buyer believe you delivered the outcome. It can draft a thoughtful point of view. It cannot give that point of view the weight of a leader who has been right in public for years. Trust is earned through a track record that accumulates outside the software, in the memory of customers, in the reputation that travels through back channels, in the consistency of what you say when no campaign is running. This is why brand is becoming the scarce asset. Everything downstream of trust can be automated. Trust itself has to be built the slow way, and that slowness is now the advantage.
Distinctiveness Over Optimization
For a decade marketing rewarded optimization. Test the subject line, tune the funnel, shave the cost per lead. That work still matters, but it no longer wins, because every team is running the same optimization loops against the same benchmarks and converging on the same answers. The teams pulling ahead are the ones investing in distinctiveness: a clear opinion about the market, a voice that sounds like a specific human, a category narrative that competitors cannot copy without sounding like a tribute act. Optimization makes you efficient. Distinctiveness makes you chosen. In a flattened market, being chosen is the only metric that compounds.
What I Am Protecting
I think about brand now the way I used to think about infrastructure. It is the layer that everything else depends on, and it is the layer that takes the longest to rebuild if you neglect it. So I protect the things that make us recognizable. I protect the point of view even when it is inconvenient. I protect the quality bar on the work that carries our name, because the moment our content becomes indistinguishable from the median AI output, we have handed away the only durable moat we had. The tools will keep getting better and cheaper for everyone. The reason a buyer picks us over an identical competitor will always have to come from somewhere the tools cannot reach.
